What is the best way to tie down a canoe?

First, secure the hull straps: Place foam blocks under the hull or gunwales. Place a cam buckle against the boat. Run the other strap end over the end of the boat, under the roof rack bar, back up over the boat, under the rack bar, and up through the cam buckle. Tighten the strap by pulling down on the loose end.

How do you use a canoe block?

With the blocks clipped onto the gunwales, carefully load the canoe onto the roof with the No-Skid™ surface down, supporting the canoe. Once the canoe is resting on the cross bars, clip on the blocks to the cross bars at each contact point. Once loaded, adjust the boat and block positions to create optimum stability.

Are bow and stern tie downs necessary?

Your bow and stern ties are just as important as the ties you use to secure the kayak to your rack. When you tie your kayak down, do not weave your straps through scupper holes as this can cause stress fractures.

Do you need a roof rack for a canoe?

Canoe Racks are a must when carrying a canoe on your vehicle. Roof Mounted Canoe Racks REQUIRE that you already have a roof rack system in place, either from the manufacturer of your vehicle, or if your vehicle roof is bare, find a roof rack fit for your specific vehicle.

How do you secure gear in a canoe?

The most common way to secure equipment loads in place is with a single tie-down line. This involves running the tie-down line from a secure anchor point (usually one of the thwarts) over, under and around your bags until they’re lashed securely in place.

Do you need foam blocks for canoe?

If you’ve got nothing up there, you’re going to need some foam blocks to support the canoe and keep it off the top of your car. If you can depress the roof with your hand, don’t put the foam block there. Position your canoe so that the yoke or middle thwart is equi-distant between the contact points with the car.

Do you need to tie down the front of a kayak?

When carrying a kayak — or any long load — the front and rear must be anchored to avoid rocking. Rocking can cause damage to the vehicle, kayak, and roof racks. Some vehicles come with anchor points under the bonnet and boot for towing while other vehicles may need to use alternative securing methods.

Can you haul a canoe right side up?

Canoes can be strapped directly to the rack. For added security, we recommend the Canoe Carrier accessory (shown at right) that prevents the canoe from shifting side-to-side during transport.
