What bracket do you use for floating shelves?
Our Floating Shelf Brackets have a 1.5″ wide flat bracket with variable lengths. The wood shelf you purchase needs to be over 1.5″ thick to make the bracket invisible. Welded to the flat bracket are flat dowels that stick out of the bracket. The amount of dowels welded to the bracket depends on the length.

How far apart should floating shelf brackets be?
24 inches apart

How deep do floating shelf brackets need to be?
Typical shelf depths are 12” for kitchen, 10” for living room/bookshelves. A 3/4” diameter rod will handle both with ease. Using smaller rods like 5/8″ or 1/2″ means you wont be able to go as deep, or hold as much. Using larger diameter rods means you can go deeper.

Are bracket shelves stronger than floating?
Floating shelves mounted into the periodic stud will not be as strong as floating shelves mounted into a solid backing that runs along the entire shelf. The gaps between mounting points will introduce flex in the bracket and the shelf can sag at worst, and will be weaker at best.
Why does my floating shelf sag?
The one reason these types of shelves fail is because the hardware doesn’t hold up overtime. Once it starts to sag, things literally go sideways, sliding off your shelf. Or at worst, your shelf could fall right off. The hardware can also limit what you can place on the shelf when you’ve got little weight support.

How big of a screw do I need for a shelf?
Use same size screw as I suggested – thickness of bracket + 2″ length, or a more sturdy fixing if you can get them as advised by DIYDave (screw diameter could be an issue, it has to fit in the bracket hole!) As for screw length going into the shelf, its only fixing it in position, so thickness of the bracket + an inch or so would be ample.
