INFeD (Iron Dextran Injection USP) is a dark brown, slightly viscous sterile liquid complex of ferric hydroxide and dextran for intravenous or intramuscular use. Each mL contains the equivalent of 50 mg of elemental iron (as an iron dextran complex), approximately 0.9% sodium chloride, in water for injection.

Individual doses of 2 mL or less may be given on a daily basis until the calculated total amount required has been reached. INFeD is given undiluted at a slow gradual rate not to exceed 50 mg (1 mL) per minute.

How long does it take for INFeD to work?

The onset is usually 24-48 hours after administration and symptoms generally subside within 3-4 days. The etiology of these reactions is not known. The potential for a delayed reaction must be considered when estimating the risk/benefit of treatment. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 2 mL undiluted iron dextran.

Is Injectafer safe?

Injectafer’s efficacy and safety have been studied in more than 40 clinical trials with more than 8,800 patients worldwide. Most Injectafer side effects are mild or go away after a short time, but the drug has also been linked to hypophosphatemia, or abnormally low phosphate.

How do you give INFeD?

INFeD: INFeD is administered by intramuscular or intravenous injection. Before administering therapeutic doses, a test dose of 25 mg (0.5 mL) should be given. Give INFeD test doses gradually over at least 30 seconds. Observe the patient for at least 1 hour after test dose administration.
