Can a car code reader be wrong?
Most cars today (anything manufactured after 1996, actually) have an onboard computer that stores trouble codes when something goes wrong with a major component in the engine, transmission or emissions system.
Does car need to be on for OBD2?
Always turn the ignition on or have the car running according to the instructions in the manual. Failure to do this might corrupt the scanning software. It’s also very important that you drive around with the manual for the specific scanner model that you’re using.
Do cheap code readers work?
A basic code reader that sells for less than $50 may be fine for reading “generic” diagnostic trouble codes, but it may not read “OEM” or “enhanced” codes that are vehicle specific. These are self-checks that the OBD II system runs to make sure the vehicle is operating properly and is running clean.
Why is my check engine light off but code still there?
The problem that triggered the code may not have happened enough times to illuminate the light. This most likely means the issue is not critical and that the code is pending. So if the check engine light is off, but you see an error code, use an OBD2 scanner to help identify what the problem is.
