What is an X-bow on a ship?
The Ulstein X-Bow (or just X-BOW) is an inverted ship’s bow designed by Ulstein Group to improve handling in rough seas, and to lower fuel consumption by causing less hydrodynamic drag. It is shaped somewhat like a submarine’s bow.
Why is it called an X-Bow?
As the name suggests, the inverted bow design has its farthest point at the extreme point of the vessel (towards the waterline) which gives a continuous sharp bow shape to the hull. The sharp design at the extreme front helps the vessel to cut through the waves and improve overall stability, especially in heavy waves.

How much fuel could be saved by building a bulb bow?
Bulbous bow can help to reduce a ship’s resistance and thus to save the fuel consumption up to 15%, however, it is also regarded as a threat to a struck ship in collision accidents because it may generally penetrate the side shell of the vessel, which may cause the leakage of hazardous goods.

Is the X-Bow vessel in the right element?
The X-BOW vessel is in her right element when in the more harsh environments. In rough head seas, the slamming will be reduced, resulting in reduced vibrations. This is not only a question of comfort, but also the security for those travelling on the vessel.
What does the X bow hull shape do?
The X-BOW® experience. The X-BOW® makes a huge difference in sea behaviour. The X-BOW® splits the wave energy and reduces the slamming impact. Successfully proven in more than 100 ships, the hull shape is about to become a game changer for expedition cruising.
What are the advantages of the X Bow?
Instead of just rising on the waves and then dropping with colossal force, the X-BOW® is able to distribute the force more evenly across its surface – enabling the ship to remain more stable during poor weather conditions, increasing comfort for passengers and crew alike.
