Use a mild detergent with cold water on a gentle cycle for blue jeans, or warm water on the same cycle for white denim. If you have a front-loading washer…you’re in luck. These washers are even more gentle on your jeans. Do not use hot water to wash your jeans, as the fibers may shrink.
Are you supposed to wash raw denim?
When it’s time to wash, you’ll know it (if being frequently worn, it’s probably around the 6 month mark). And when it’s time to wash, we recommend actually washing your jeans. We recommend machine washing raw denim jeans (by themselves), with detergent, and hanging to dry – it’s the easy method.

The bathtub / hand-washing method
- Turn the jeans inside out.
- Fill the sink/bathtub up with room temperature water.
- Add Woolite Dark detergent (or similar) and white vintage and mix in well.
- Place the jeans in the water and agitate them for a minute or so.
- Let them soak for an hour, agitating every once in a while.

Raw denim and sanforized denim should be dry clean only, with three to four months of wear before the first dry clean. As for your classic denim jeans, including stonewashed or acid-washed, I recommend washing with cold water and air-drying after approximately five wears.
