What is the best weed control fabric?
DuPont Plantex Premium is the most popular ‘standard’ choice for weed control. It is permeable to water and air, and has a 20-year product guarantee.
How do I put down Mypex?
If the garden bed is finished with a timber edge, simply use a trowel (or something similar) to push the ends of the mat tight along the timber edge. Then, leaving the weed mat laying out of the garden bed, lay the end of it in the trench then back fill the trench on top of the weed mat, and give it a good stamp.
What is in mulch?
A variety of materials are used as mulch: Organic residues: grass clippings, leaves, hay, straw, kitchen scraps, comfrey, shredded bark, whole bark nuggets, sawdust, shells, woodchips, shredded newspaper, cardboard, wool, animal manure, etc. Rubber mulch: made from recycled tire rubber.
Is weed membrane any good?
The concept that a membrane can be used to suppress weeds for long is not real. It’s the weed suppressing membrane myth. Let me qualify that further. If you want to be able to plant in or around it, and have your plants survive or thrive, it does not work.
Will water drain through weed membrane?
The water should soak through, although it may be slow. Try pouring a bucket of water on top to see how long it takes. I have membrane down in my front garden and I never water the plants there. If you have used the correct membrane the water will drain through.
Is weed barrier bad?
Weeding is a nightmare. While the landscape fabric will reduce the number of weeds in your garden, it won’t entirely get rid of them. The weeds that do manage to get through the fabric are usually horrible enmeshed with the fabric itself. After a year or two, you may end up with a bigger problem than you started with.
Do you need membrane under bark?
Yes, for flower beds, bark mulch can be applied directly to the soil without the need for a membrane. If, however, you are constructing a play area or path, a weed-proof membrane is recommended.
Do you put membrane under slabs?
A sub-base would then need to be installed before laying the paving. Weed control membranes are not essential, however if you are aware of an area with invasive weeds or roots or excavated unreliable ground, a woven groundcover or membrane would be advised.
