The Association Offices Return
To Campus

The Association of Former Students staff returned to the Clayton W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center the week of Dec. 15 with plans to open the facility to visitors in January 2009. Association staff will be available by phone or e- mail to assist the Aggie Network during relocation; however,
ongoing construction through December prevents public access to the Alumni Center until January. To reach a member of The Association staff, please call (979) 845-7514, or visit AggieNetwork.com for e-mail information.

The Next Tradition
The Association of Former Students hosted The Next Tradition graduation party Dec. 11 at the Student Recreation Center. More than 3,500 students and their family and friends were invited to come pick up their former student decals, win door prizes and connect with regional A&M Clubs. The Next Tradition is to welcome graduates into The Association of Former Students.

Aggies Win Fundraising Contest
Texas A&M beat the Texas Longhorns by more than 1,000 donors in a competition to see which university's former students could achieve a higher amount of participation. Held in conjunction with the A&M vs. UT football matchup, the competition raised $90,217 for Texas A&M and boasted a grand total of 1,618 donors. Every financial gift helps build on
AD
The Association's mission to strengthen Texas A&M. Last year, The Association of Former Students provided $4.6 million in direct support for scholarships, financial aid, academics, student activities, Aggie traditions and more.

New Titles For Some Staff & Volunteers
The Leadership Council of The Association of Former Students met Nov. 8 in College Station. During this bi-annual meeting, the Council elected the 2009 Board of Directors and approved an amendment to The Association By-laws related to the nomenclature of both elected and professional leadership titles.

President Bush Speaks
At December Convocation

President George W. Bush addressed Texas A&M graduates and guests Dec. 12 in Reed Arena, becoming the University's first Commencement Convocation speaker. Commencement marked President Bush’s first time back in Aggieland since his time as Governor of Texas. Graduates were awarded their degrees at two later ceremonies. The Commencement Convocation was a new concept for Texas A&M graduations. Texas A&M President Dr. Elsa Murano said in a letter that she hopes for the Commencement Convocation to become a graduation tradition.

Richard Box ’61 Appointed
To TAMUS Board of Regents

Gov. Rick Perry '72 appointed Richard Box '61 of Austin to the Texas A&M System Board of Regents to replace J.L. Huffines '44, who resigned Dec. 6. Box is a dentist in private practice and a member of the Capitol Area Boy Scouts Board of Directors, Texas A&M Letterman's Association, and National Guard Association of Texas. Box earned his bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University in zoology. His appointed term on the Board of Regents expires Feb. 1, 2013.

Lost Species Is Rediscovered
A team led by a Texas A&M anthropologist discovered a group of primates not seen alive in 85 years. Pygmy tarsiers are the size of a small mouse and weigh less than 2 ounces. Anthropologist Sharon Gursky-Doyen, along with one of her graduate students—Nanda Grow—and a team of locals trapped three of the creatures in late August. Over two months, two males and one female were trapped and released with radio collars so scientists could track the creatures' movements.

President's Meritorious Service Awards
The 2008 President's Meritorious Service Awards were presented by University President Dr. Elsa Murano on Dec. 1 to 25 outstanding staff employees and one outstanding team for their service to the University. Individuals and teams are chosen annually for this award by nomination and an anonymous committee appointed by the President. The Association of Former Students co-sponsors the award program. For a full list of all honorees, follow the link.
Elephant Walk
The tradition of Elephant Walk continued Nov. 25. Now 82 years old, the custom of senior classmates joining together for a final walk around campus started with the Class of 1926. As seniors, they made the first symbolic pass around the school's grounds to signify the end of their time on campus. Since then, through support from The Association of Former Students, the walk has continued to be a way for seniors to gather, reminisce and say goodbye.
