Roger Young Remembered

On Oct. 23, the college said farewell to a much loved and respected colleague, teacher and friend at a memorial service held in OU's Memorial Student Union.

Roger Young joined the ConocoPhillips School of Geology and Geophysics as an associate professor in 1990. He received a B.S. in geology with high honors in 1965 from Wesleyan University and his M.S. in geophysics in 1968 from Stanford University. He received his Ph.D. in physics (geophysics) in 1979 from the University of Toronto. He was a research geophysicist with Phillips Petroleum from 1979 to 1982 and senior research geophysicist from 1982-1986. Young held the position of Senior Research Fellow at Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia from 1986-1990.

MPGE Faculty Member receives SPE Award

I.Yucel Akkutlu received the 2009 SPE Outstanding Service Award for his role as associate editor for the SPE Journal at the SPE ATCE meeting held in New Orleans in October. This is the second year in a row that Akkutlu has received this honor.

MCEE Welcomes New Faculty and Staff Members

Katie Keranen joined the ConocoPhillips School of Geology and Geophysics faculty in fall 2009. Keranen completed her Ph.D. at Stanford University and previously held positions at Exxon Mobil and the USGS as a geophysicist. Her postdoctoral research at the USGS centered on tectonics, earthquakes and hazards in the Pacific Northwest.  Read more on Keranen

Pamela Conine is the new financial administrator in the Mewbourne College. Prior to joining our staff in August, Conine was the senior accountant at the Heart Rhythm Institute at OU's Health Sciences Center for the past five years.

Oklahoma Geological Survey Hosts Workshops

In August, OGS co-sponsored the Unconventional Reservoirs workshop with the Oklahoma Geological Society and Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). Over 260 participants attended the one-day workshop organized by Carl H. Sondergeld. On Nov. 3, 179 people attended a workshop on the natural gas assessment of the Arkoma Basin, Ouachita Thrust Belt and Reelfoot Rift. Speakers included personnel from the U.S. Geological Survey.
