Chapters Team up to Fight Flooding in Fargo

The Red River, which flows north through Fargo, N.D. and Moorhead, M.N., reached record flood levels this spring, threatening both cities as well as neighboring towns. North Dakota State University closed its campus for the week so students could help prepare the millions of sandbags required to protect the city and its residents.

When Brothers from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks heard news of the impending flood, they drove 90 miles to and from Fargo each day and joined efforts with the Brothers from NDSU. Braving cold temperatures--rain one day and a blizzard the next--they formed assembly lines and passed 20 to 40 pound sand bags that would, in the end, become 28 miles of dikes to guard against the rising river.

Campaign Success is Building Upon the Rock, Preserving Our Future

Even in the midst of a struggling economy, Sigma Nu's Building Upon the Rock, Preserving Our Future capital campaign has gained significant traction among alumni who want to play a role in our effort to invest in the ethical development and academic potential of young leaders, provide competitive housing for undergraduate chapters, and preserve our rich history through the Sigma Nu Headquarters Shrine.

Collegiate Housing Bill Needs Our Support

In an age of rising tuition, is there anything that can be done to make college more affordable? The answer is Yes! Fraternities and sororities are the nation’s largest not-for-profit landlords, providing housing options that are often less expensive than university residence halls or off-campus housing.

However, current tax law prevents not-for-profit organizations, including fraternities and sororities, from using charitable contributions to build and renovate student housing--even where safety
upgrades are required by city ordinances. Yet colleges and universities are not prohibited from doing so.

You can help Sigma Nu and more than 90 other Greek organizations erase the disparity by passing the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act of 2009 (H.R1547/S.781), which will allow fraternity and sorority foundations to use tax-deductible contributions for necessary safety upgrades, increased capacity, and energy efficiency in Greek housing.
