RESEARCH TO CHANGE WOMEN'S LIVES: INTERVENTIONS WITH PREGNANT WOMEN
The Center for Research on Violence Against Women believes science can only reach its highest potential value when it translates into improving the lives of women and children. Ann Coker, our Verizon Wireless Endowed Chair of Study on Violence Against Women is based in the College of Medicine and focuses on the health effects of violence. Part of Ann's current research involves screening for domestic violence among pregnant women served through the University of Kentucky High Risk Obstetrics Clinic. Recent findings reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association that revealed homicide as the single most common cause of death among pregnant women in the United States today highlight the extraordinary importance of Ann's work. The project is an important example of how a research project examining the effectiveness of universal screening serves as a critical link to women receiving needed protective and advocacy services. |
