Is the Bafang bbs02 mid drive really that good?
The Bafang BBS02 mid-drive conversion kit really is a great conversion kit. The motor has the best in class pedal assist, is build nicely, offers a lot of power and torque, is really versatile, and can be installed relatively easily. The only aspect where it falls a bit behind is its controller reliability.

Am I correct in understanding that as of today – mid August 2019 – Bafang makes a motor with torque sensing for purpose-built bikes but not for adding to an existing bike. Is there an aftermarket torque sensor for a bbs02 or bbshd? I know there is a Tongsheng motor, but what about bafang?
Can a Bafang hub motor be reprogrammed?
The Bafang programming feature is ONLY for the Bafang mid-drive motors. So for the BBS01, BBS02 and BBSHD. The bafang hub motor kits, unfortunately can’t be reprogrammed. I am glad you asked to check it, because the Bafang programming cable will not work with your hub motor. It’s strictly a feature of the mid-drives.
